Dear Avonworth Parents/Guardians,
At the November 23, 2020, School Board Meeting, the Avonworth Board of School Directors voted to approve a framework for decision-making with regard to the instructional model the District will operate and when the District will transition between models.
Decisions will be based on the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) Instructional model chart including the County requirement for two weeks in a level to initiate a change in our educational model.
The decision will be based on local and county positivity and incident rate data, deferring to the most concerning level of transmission, as well as specific District issues or concerns.
The District will communicate the plan for the Instructional Model on a weekly basis.
Weekly communication will be sent to our school community on Friday (or the last day of the school week) to indicate the educational model that the District will operate in for the upcoming two weeks. The District’s decision for transitioning between educational models will follow PDE’s recommendations outlined below.
The first week the county is in Substantial, PDE recommends Hybrid or Remote Learning.
The second week in Substantial, PDE recommends Remote Learning.
To transition out of Remote Learning and back to Hybrid/In-Person Instruction, the county must be in Moderate for two consecutive weeks.
To summarize, PDE recommends two weeks in any level of transmission before making a transition between educational models.
The following tables indicate the level of transmission in Allegheny County for the previous two weeks and the educational model the District will operate in during the upcoming two weeks.

The educational model decision above is made by utilizing the Pennsylvania Department of Health COVID-19 Early Warning Monitoring System Dashboard, which has reported the following data for the past two weeks.
Also factored in this decision are data for our local area.

A new order from the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Secretary of Health went into effect on Friday, November 20, 2020. This order requires anyone traveling to another state to have a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to entering back into Pennsylvania or to quarantine for 14 days upon arriving back in Pennsylvania. When students return to our buildings, the District requires that this order is followed by any family that travels outside of Pennsylvania as long as this order is in effect. Students needing to quarantine for 14 days will have their absences marked as excused absences.
As a school community, it takes everyone to do their part to limit high-risk behaviors that can lead to the transmission of and the exposure of others to COVID-19. The greatest risks are when people of any age do not engage in the most important mitigation efforts (distancing, masks, and washing hands often). Our collective, community-wide effort with respect to these mitigation efforts is critical to what happens in our schools. Thank you for your efforts to help limit and hopefully stop the spread of COVID-19 in our school community.
Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
