The Avonworth Odyssey of the Mind team is home from their journey to the 2022 World Finals in Ames, Iowa!
As a first-year team, these amazing kids exceeded all expectations, finishing 12th in the world from an initial field of almost 1,000 teams in a creative problem-solving competition.
Their problem was to create two vehicles with different propulsion systems that performed a series of tasks. These tasks released clues allowing characters to solve the puzzle behind an escape room that the team designed.
Their solution involved two kids navigating a historical art museum, using self-designed cars that circled the Eiffel Tower, crossed the Delaware River, and knocked down the Berlin wall. A Pioneer and George Washington helped the kids perform their tasks, allowing them to determine that the museum curator had stolen artwork before the detective was even on the case. Determined kids can do anything!
Their learnings spanned valuable life skills such as creative and spontaneous problem solving, teamwork, and performing to an audience. The kids developed confidence while also maintaining humility. They are eager to continue this Odyssey of the Mind journey again next year to continue their growth.
Their memories include interacting with students from across the country and around the globe, making new friendships, and enhancing old ones. They spread the #BeTheKindKid message, helped each other through stressful moments and had some fun along the way.
Thank you for supporting this great group of kids. This experience will undoubtedly shape all of their futures.
