GATE Students Compete in the Phipps Conservatory Fairchild Challenge

Earlier this semester, a number of 7th and 8th grade GATE students participated in the first challenge of the Phipps Conservatory Fairchild Challenge. This is a year-long program that encourages students to learn about the environment and environmental issues.

For Challenge #1, students were tasked with learning about iridescence in nature. They studied plants and animals that exhibit iridescence and learned about the difference between iridescence and pigments. Students were then challenged to create a sculpture using recycled or repurposed materials from one plant or animal exhibiting this characteristic.

Schools from all over the area competed in this challenge and the sculptures from Avownworth earned second place honors!

Congratulations to participants Izzy Pecosh, Eva Roedersheimer, Manal Shafiq, Grant Brosius, Megan Obersteiner, Ailin O'Neil, Nate Parker, Lyra Klinedinst, Alahhah Pavlic, Phoebe MacKillop, Zoe Boyd, Sydney Langford, Tessa Burens, Grace Keller, Millie McAdams, Naina Mason, and Ella Machen.

Their creations are currently featured and on display as part of Phipps Conservatory's Winter Flower Show.
