Health Services

The goal of the Avonworth Nursing Staff is to provide our students with the best possible care.  In order to do so we must keep each student’s health information up-to-date.  Please update your child's building nurse of any changes in health, medication, or contact information.  If a nurse refers your child to a doctor we would appreciate a follow-up phone call or email so we can track trends and stay alert to potential problems.

Sick Day Guidelines

It can be hard to decide if you should keep your child home from school when they aren’t feeling their best.  Remember sick children belong at home and well children belong in school. Two questions to keep in mind are: 1) Are they able to actively participate in the learning activities at school? and 2) Are they putting others at risk of becoming sick?

Please help keep others from getting sick by keeping your child home when they are sick.  Remind them of hand-washing and covering coughs/sneezes.  Follow the "24-Hour Rule"

  • Fever (100 degrees or higher) - Keep your child home until fever is gone for 24 hours (WITHOUT the help of fever reducing medicine like Tylenol or Advil)
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea - Keep your child home for 24 hours after the last time he/she has vomited or had diarrhea and is eating a normal diet
  • Antibiotics - Keep you child home at least 24 hours after the first done of antibiotics

Sending your child back to school too soon may make their recovery take longer and may make others sick.  Symptoms that prevent them from participating in school may include:

  1. Very tired, lack of sleep, or lack of appetite

  2. Uncontrollable cough (especially if they do not consistently cover effectively)

  3. Severe pain - sore throat, body aches, ear aches, stomach aches
