Exploring Ecosystems and Insects at Avonworth Primary Center

Second graders at Avonworth Primary Center have been busy investigating how organisms survive in different ecosystems. Through engaging lessons and activities, students explored what plants and animals need to live, the types of habitats they thrive in, and how to identify different insects. They also observed the life cycle of a butterfly firsthand.

As part of the school’s World of Work career exploration program, students learned about the field of Entomology. The unit concluded with a special visit from the staff at Fern Hollow Nature Center, who brought learning to life with several hands-on experiences. Students experienced “vision like a fly,” explored decomposers, and discovered how bees pollinate.

This memorable experience was made possible through the generous support of the Avonworth Fund for Educational Excellence.
