8th Grade Civics Students Explore Citizenship in Action

Eighth Grade students are kicking off the school year by learning what it truly means to be a U.S. citizen—both in rights and responsibilities. Their Civics classes have already combined teamwork, history, and practical simulations to make these lessons come alive.

The first project invited students to work in teams to design posters answering the question, “How to Be a Good Citizen.”

Next, students turned their attention to the American Flag. They learned the history and symbolism of the flag’s colors and design, along with the proper folding techniques that honor its meaning.

Most recently, students put their financial decision-making skills to the test in a real-world simulation. Acting as prospective homeowners in Allegheny County, they navigated the responsibilities of purchasing a house, paying a mortgage, and meeting tax obligations.

Through these hands-on lessons, our 8th graders are gaining not only a deeper knowledge of civics but also practical skills and a strong sense of civic pride. These experiences help prepare them to grow into thoughtful, responsible citizens—ready to make a difference in the world.
