On October 23 at White Oak Park, over 1100 runners from across Western Pennsylvania competed in the annual WPIAL Cross Country Championship meet.  This 3.1 mile course is one of the most challenging in the state featuring rugged trails, challenging hills, and a very fast 400 meter sprint to the finish.

In the first race of the day, the Avonworth Girls Cross Country team competed in the AA Girls WPIAL Championship race.  Led by Senior Captain Natalie Frank, the girls team finished in 16th place out of 27 qualifying teams.  The team had a strong finish to the season after compiling a winning record of 9-6 this Fall.  The future for the team looks bright as 6 out of 8 varsity runners will return next year and look to build on this year's success.

In the Boys AA WPIAL Championship meet, 227 runners competed for an opportunity to qualify for the honor of running at the PIAA State Championship meet in Hershey, PA.  Finishing in 31st place overall, Avonworth Sophomore Ryder Evans achieved this impressive recognition.  Ryder conquered the grueling course in an amazing 17 minutes and 15 seconds, a personal best for him.  By accomplishing this feat, Ryder becomes the first Avonworth runner to qualify for the Boys PIAA State Championship since 2019 (Jackson Habala).  Ryder's time at the WPIAL Championship (17:15) is also the 4th fastest time for an Avonworth runner at the WPIAL Championship in school history (Lucas Zarzeczny 2004-2006).

The PIAA State Championship meet will take place on Saturday, November 1 at Parkview Cross Country Course in Hershey, PA.  The AA Boys Race starts at 12:30 and will be broadcast on PCNTV.com
