Welcome to Avonworth Primary Center!
I am Dr. Scott Miller and I have served as Avonworth Primary Center's Principal since the building's opening in the fall of 2014. Prior to becoming principal, I was the Assistant Elementary School Principal (K-5) from 2010-2014. My teaching career began at Avonworth as a 6th grade math teacher in the middle school in 2005.
I completed my Ph.D. in Instructional Management and Leadership through Robert Morris University in 2016. As part of my doctoral research, I studied the impact of creativity measures through student participation in a maker space.
In addition to being an administrator, I am an active member in Trying Together (formally PAEYC), the Remake Learning network, and serve on the leadership team for the AIU/United Way's Hi5 Kindergarten Transition Program.
My name is Pharlan Ives, and I am excited to start a new path in my career as the Assistant Principal of Avonworth
Primary Center and Elementary Schools. I am honored to become a part of the Avonworth
family and community and assist Dr. Miller and Dr. Battistone in the
transformational work taking place in the district. I
am devoted to working closely with teachers, parents, and community members, and
I am eagerly looking forward to being a part of the Avonworth family.
2020-2021 school year will be my 16th year in education. I have an undergraduate
degree in Child Development from Florida State University and a Master’s degree
in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Duquesne University. I have
continued my educational path into administration through University of
Pittsburgh’s K-12 Principal certificate program. Before coming to Avonworth
School District, I taught preschool and pre-K for six years before teaching
various grades at the elementary level. My most recent assignment was third grade
for the last six years. My strong desire to make a positive impact on an entire
school community is what has driven me to this work, and I know Avonworth is a
unique and special place that will support me as I continue to grow in
of education, I am originally from south Florida where majority of my family
still resides. I met my husband while teaching in Atlanta, GA, and we raised
our niece for the past eleven years. She recently graduated from high school
and just completed her first year of college. I am proud to say she is aspiring
to become an educator as well. This is my eleventh year in Pittsburgh, and
though the weather does not compare to Florida, the wonderful communities have
made Western PA home.
