Mike Mancuso Hired as Avonworth Head Varsity

Boys’ Basketball Coach

The Avonworth School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Mr. Mike Mancuso as the next Head Coach of the Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team.  Mr. Mancuso has been a physical education teacher in the Avonworth School District for the past eight years and brings with him a depth of experience as an athlete and coach.

Mr. Mancuso attended North Allegheny High Schol where he lettered in football, track, and basketball.  He also attended East Carolina University where he joined the football team as a walk-on.  On the North Allegheny gridiron, Mr. Mancuso led the ‘94 team in rushing, touchdowns, and interceptions.  On the basketball court in that same year, Mr. Mancuso was recognized as First Team All-Section Quad North, Fab 22, and also received a Player of the Week award.

With his success as a student-athlete, it is no surprise that Mr. Mancuso took his experience to the sidelines as a coach.  Mr. Mancuso has seventeen years of coaching experience working with every age range, various experience levels, and several different sports.  Most recently, Mr. Mancuso was the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator of the 2019 WPIAL Champion Avonworth Varsity Football Team.  As a basketball coach, Mr. Mancuso helped turn around the Shaler basketball program as an assistant to Coach Niederberger.  Mr. Mancuso was part of the Hampton program that won the 08/09 WPIAL Championship and also served as the ninth-grade coach at Avonworth.

Mr. Mancuso stated, “This is such an exciting time for Avonworth Basketball. The community support and the type of student-athletes we have here makes this a special opportunity. We plan on working hard to win on and off the court.”

Mr. Mancuso is eager to get started and will focus on building his program on the foundation of character and relationships.
