2019-20 Final Budget
Members of the Avonworth School Board unanimously approved
the 2019-20 Final Budget at its June 10th Legislative Meeting.
The general fund budget is $34,339,313 and has factored in a
.43 mill increase in the real estate tax rate.
The real estate tax rate of 19.53 mills equates to an annual school tax
bill of $4,156 on a median valued home in Avonworth, which is $212,850. The tax increase equates to about $91 for the
average homeowner and will raise an additional $486,000 for the district. Each mill equates to approximately $1,130,000
in school property tax billings.
Included in the budget are 2.5 new teaching positons and a reading specialist to work with the District’s K-2 student population. These positions have been added to serve the increasing enrollment, which has increased by 190 students over the last three years. Additionally, $300,000 is budgeted for a one-time purchase of new curriculum for math in the middle school and language arts at the elementary level. Additionally, $160,000 is included for contracted security expenses along with $245,000 for technology equipment for the district’s one-to-one initiative.
The Avonworth School District annual budget continues to be
negatively impacted by the under-funded State retirement system for public
employees. The mandated employer
contribution rate for the Pennsylvania State Employer Retirement System (PSERS)
is set at 34.29%. It is important to
note that this rate has more than doubled since the 2013/14 school year when
the rate was set at 16.93%. The
financial impact of these increases in the 19/20 budget year is over $1.2
