The Avonworth Band Program continues to thrive in quality and drastically increase in participation as the students work together towards being life-long learners and lovers of music. The elementary band program (grades 4-6) had 150 students performing on instruments in the 2017-18 school year and in 2018-19 there are 220 students involved.
All students who participate in the elementary band receive small-group instrumental instruction every six school days and students in 5th-6th grade additionally receive full ensemble instruction every other day. Please visit the elementary band website for more information about being a part of the band and other useful tools for students.
High School/Middle School Band
In 2017-2018 our concert band involved 40 students in the high school and 40 students in the middle school. The student participated and performed in two annual concerts performing music at or above their ability level. The high school competed in PMEA Music Performance Assessment and was awarded a Superior rating. At least two students from each group represented our school district at PMEA district band events at their respective levels. We had a student who place first overall in PMEA State Band and first overall at Nafme All-Nationals. Next year’s programs will continue to grow in numbers.
The 2017-2018 Marching band involved 62 students in grades 8-12. The band performed in two local parades, Friday night football games, three Band festivals, and countless parades and rallies during the school day. Our band also took a trip to Chicago in April where they performed at the Museum of Science and Industry. Next year’s band will have 75 members from grades 8-12. The band will be making its second appearance in Disney World.
The jazz band officially started in 2015, rehearsing once a week. The band is made up of students in grades 6-12 and averages around 20 members. We perform annually each spring in our Small Ensemble Concert, and we have had the honor of performing at the Distinguished Educators and School Board Member banquet in March of 2018. The goal is to build up our repertoire and perform twice in the spring. In the coming years, we hope to open for the Balcony Big Band at Jergel’s like many of the other local high school jazz bands.
